1996
Wubshet, H.(Menschen Fur Menschen Foundation (Ethiopia))
In a region like illubabor in western Ethiopia, though the existing natural basis is sufficient for developing new suitable areas for Agriculture, cultivation is highly practised even at free fall slopes and clearing of forest on hills and mountain tops increasing the danger of degradation. The objectives of this study is to review the dynamics of vetiver usage for soil and water conservation in Mettu areas of illubabor region in Western Ethiopia, to analyse the implications of using vetiver in terms of soil degradation and productivity, and to evaluate the potential impact of vetiver hedge on long term productivity and on the sustainable use of natural resources. A systematic study of vetiver distribution over the past six years was carried out by means of remote sensing techniques and field survey. In addition a plot size study of soil erosion and run off under different usage of vetiver and management condition was carried out in the research sites of the foundation, in collaboration with the Soil Conservation Research Project. Finally fertility at different management levels was monitored to determine the implication of using vetiver hedges for soil degradation and productivity and also to determine the potential for sustainable use.
