First trees of the mango breeding program of the ARC-ITSC were planted at Nelspruit in 1974. The 1200 seedlings were grown from seed derived from open-pollinated flowers, mostly of Sensation followed by an additional 840 seedlings which were planted at Messina in the same year. A further 260 trees were established in 1981/82 at Nelspruit. From the seedlings at Messina, four new cultivars namely Heidi, Neldica, Neldawn and Ceriese were released at Messina, four new cultivars namely Heidi, Neldica, Neldawn and Ceriese were released in 1990. During this time a new breeding program was registered by the ITGC. This program is now well established and can be attributed to the Messina plantings where the culled seedlings are being replaced annually with new hybrids since 1995. This results in the continuous availability of bearing seedlings for evaluation. The total of 4,800 trees are now being evaluated. During the previous season, seven new selections were identified for Phase I extension evaluation, bringing the total to 46 promising selections. This poster focus on some of these newly developed seedlings as well as two cultivars, Joa and Chene, which were released to the industry in 1998.
