Utilization of EM (Effective microorganism) fermented manure in vegetables

Aim of this research was to study the consequences of the utilization of Effective Microorganisms (EM) in fermented manure on growth and yield of vegetables, and on some properties of the soil. The experiment was conducted during October 1996-August 1998 at the Vegetable Division, Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture Production, Maejo Universality, Chiang Mai on San Sai series Soil. The experimented area has been engaged in various kinds of vegetables growing together with the continuous use of chemical fertilizers and insecticides for more than 20 years and undergone many problems such as surface compaction, non-friable and soil-borne diseases. The 4 replications by 9 treatments RCBD was assigned to yard long beans and snake eggplants planted in a plot of 1*5 m. Each plot was randomly applied with one of the following treatments 1) chicken manure fermented with EM+EM: molasses 2) chicken manure 3) quail manure fermented with EM+EM: molasses 4) quail manure 5) pig manure fermented with EM+Em: molasses 6) pig manure 7) cow manure fermented with EM+EM: molasses 8) cow manure 9) 15-15-15, 46-0-0 and 12-24-12 fertilizers. The findings showed that there was no significant differences in growth. Significant differences in yield per plot were found in the first year, but the tendency of similarity in the yield resulted from the use of EM fermented manure and chemical fertilizers was observed., No significant difference was found in yield per plot in the second year might be due to variation in climatic conditions. Significant differences in soil analyses were observed except for a decreasing trend in the soil bulk density. Plant nutrient elements and friability of the soil found to be increased. Moreover, the development of soil acidity resulted from the used of chemical fertilizers was also observed.
