Control of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) by using F-1 sterile insect technique in the cabbage field of the farmer

Diamondback moth (DBM, plutella xylostella L.),the major pest of cabbage, was controlled by radiation induced F-1 sterility in the farmers field at Amphur Kao Khor, Petchchabul province in 1997-1999. DBM was reared and irradiated at Office of atomic Energy for Peaces laboratory. The 226,681 pupae, 269,000 pupae and 333,500 pupae were irradiated by gamma radiation at the dose of 150 gray and were released in 40 m*40 m (1 rai) of experimental plot in 1997, 1998 and 1999, respectively. The sterility of parents in 1997, 1998 and 1999 were 60.94 percent, 53.97 percent and 58.23 percent, respecticely. The F-1 progeny in 1997, 1998 and 1999 were 88.93 percent, 91.02 percent and 90.29 percent, respectively. The ratio of irradiated moths and non-irradiated moths in 1997, 1998 and 1999 were 5.09:1, 9.7:1 and 17.49:1, respectively. The average DBMs larvae per plant in the control plot: DBMs larvae per plant in the experimental plot in 1997, 1998 and 1999 were 7.35:8.0, 6.40:3.45, and 5.26:2.75, respectively. The cabbage yield of the control plot and the experimental plot in 1997, 1998 and 1999 were 3,592 kg./rai, 3,115 kg./rai and 1,817 kg /rai 3,618 kg./rai 4,316 kg./rai and 3,642 kg./rai. respectively.
