In Thailand orchids are the most important economic cut flowers, other important cut flowers are roses, chrysanthemum and temperate flowers which are still imported because local production is low. Besides those flowers, important tropical cut flowers include curcuma, heliconia, torch ginger and red ginger. Tropical cut flowers thrive in most part of Thailand. Growers now grow more tropical but flowers than before: however, the expansion rate is slow. This is due to the fact that they are new so there is little information on production technology. A study on the potential of tropical cut flower for production and marketing and on production technology is based on interview with growers, collectors and exporters. The result reveals that every tropical flower studied had potential for increased production since there are not many commercial growers, and they are easier to manage compared with temperate crops, and can grow almost anywhere. However, there are few sources of plant materials and lack of postharvest technology. These flowers have great potential for marketing because of their exotic shapes and colors. However, some flowers are very large and difficult to arrange and consumers are not familiar with them. Therefore, one should promote four kinds of tropical cut-flowers: curcuma. Heliconia, torch ginger, and red ginger by expanding production area, introducing new varieties suitable for each area, transferring new technology to growers, promotion research in the area of production technology and packaging. Moreover, a campaign for tropical cut flower uses should be set up.
