Rearing of black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, with continuous sediment treatment

On the idea of biological processes promotion in waste digestion and fermentation. Rearing of black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, in close recirculated water system were compare continuous sediment treatment (chain pulling method) culture to normal intensive culture. Four 1,600 sq.m. earthen ponds at Petchburi coastal aquaculture station were used as an experimental unit for two replications of each culture method from July to December 1999. It revealed that culture methods and the interaction of the methods and culture periods did not confirmed significant difference in the case of shrimp growth (p GT 0.05). At the end of experiment, survival rate and food conversion ratio did not significant difference among culture methods. But the production of sediment treatment method was significant higher than normal intensive culture (p LT 0.05). In case of water quality (salinity, pH, alkalinity, ammonia-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen and BOD), there wer no significant difference among culture methods for all items. The interaction of the methods and culture periods were not confirmed for any items, excepted ammonia-nitrogen and nitrite-nitrogen which shown highly significance among the methods between culture period (p LT 0.01). In an experiment period, sediment treatment pond had minus rate trend of increasing of ammonia-nitrogen and nitrite-nitrogen, while normal intensive culture had plus rate tread, esp. very higher in case of ammonia-nitrogen. Sediment treatment culture could do longer (135 days) than normal intensive culture which had to harvest at disease outbreak in 116 and 123 days of culture. Sediment treatment culture seems to be better than filtering method reported in other papers. So it should be made clear by the design of an experiment in future.
