Cytogenetics studies of Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) in Thailand. Blood samples were taken from the two subspecies kept in Khoa Kheow Open Zoo, Chonburi province. After the standard whole blood lymphocyte culture in presence of Colchicine, the metaphase spreads were performed on microscopic slides and air-dried. Conventional Giemsas staining were applied to stain chromosome. The results showed that the number of diploid chromosome of Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) was determined to be 2n=74, the fundamental number (NF) are 83 chromosomes in male and 84 in female. The type of autosome are 2 large metacentric, 22 large telocentric, 6 medium submetacentric and 42 medium telocentric chromosomes. X chromosome is the largest submetacentric and Y chromosome is a medium telocentric chromosome. In addition, a pair of chromosome 25 with clearly observable satellite chromosome is detected by Ag-NOR-banding. The karyotype formula for the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is as follows: 2n(74)=L sup(m) sub(2)+L sup(1) sub(22)+M sup(sm) sub(6)+M sup(1) sub(42)+sex-chromosome
