General Assessment of Türkiye's Wetlands

Wetlands with ecological and economic contribution have suffered significant losses in the past. In recent years, conservation efforts have increased. In the current study, we examined generally wetlands defined in the Ramsar Convention (1971). Distribution of wetlands in Turkey in terms of number, size, elevation levels, etc. were analyzed. As of 2021, A total of 2 594 wetlands registered in the Wetland Information System (SAYBIS), of which 1 159 are natural wetlands, 78 are marine wetlands and 1 357 are artificial wetlands. The total area of these areas is 1 491 936 ha. On the otherhands, according to the records of the General Directorate of Mapping (HGM), a total of 44,595 wetlands have been identified in Turkey and these areas total 1 213 830 ha. The largest number of wetlands is at the 0-500 m asl. The number of wetlands smaller than 1 ha is higher than the others. It will be useful to know the characteristics of the wetlands for sustainable management.
