Comparative study of several legume and cereal crops for their grain, straw yield and quality [assisting farmers in choosing the crop which could provide maximum profit and at the same time increase feed production]

Six food and three forage legumes in addition to three cereals were compared for their grain, straw yield and quality in order to provide animal feed source from which farmers could select and include in their cropping system. Randomized complete block design with four replicates at two rainfed areas, Jubeiha and M'sagar were used. Data on botanic and agronomic traits was recorded. Measurement of crude protein fibre and digestibility of leaves, branches and grain were recorded. "Dair Alla 106" (barley at Jubeiha) gave the greatest leave production at flowering stage, whereas common vetch produced the greatest at maturity stage. Common vetch maintained a high leaves/branches ratio at both stages with values of 1.83, 1.80, respectively. Leaf quality of forage species indicated that protein percentage was highest in peas; common vetch, woolly pod vetch ranged from 18-24%. The three crops had less crude fibre as compared to barley. Digestibility of leaves and branches was highest for peas and bitter vetch, values around 75% for leaves, 63% Jubeiha, 52% M'shagar for branches. At maturity stage higher protein percentage in leaves was for woolly pod vetch, values of 8.1, 9.4 for both locations, while digestibility of leaves of common vetch was 55.4 Jubeiha, 59.3 at M'shagar. For branches at the two locations, peas maintained highest protein percentage 3.3, 2.7; lowest fibre content 35.5, 45.0 and high digestibility 60.2, 505, while the lowest quality values were shown by the cereals. Grain protein percent was highest: peas and vetch values ranged from 24-26% Jubeiha, 20-24% M'shagar. Seed protein for cereals ranged from 7.0-11.2% at the two locations. Highest straw yield was from barley and wheat at both locations: "Deir Alla 106" produced 5090 kg/ha** (-1) Jubeiha. Highest grain yield was produced by the lentil "Jordan2"-1722 kg/ha** (-1) Jubeiha, 1415 kg/ha** (-1) M'shagar. Bitter vetch gave the greatest grain production 1513 kg/ha** (-1) Jubeiha, 1453 kg/ha** (-1) M'shagar. Highest harvest index was reported for chickpea "Jubeiha2" and bitter vetch, whereas the lowest was for woolly pod vetch and cereals
