Ideotype characteristics associated with higher productivity of durum wheat under Mediterranean conditions
2022
BEN FREDJ, Nermine
This study compared various phenotypic approaches to identify ideotype characteristics associated with the agronomic performance of durum wheat in Mediterranean conditions. It involved 151 high-yielding durum wheat lines from CIMMYT and 11 semi-dwarf cultivars planted in two locations in Spain. Remote sensing techniques, including RGB imaging and NDVI, were applied at different phenological stages, while stable isotope compositions were analysed in mature kernels. Vegetation indices indicating crop growth and greenness were found to correlate better with grain yield when measured post-anthesis, with higher values observed in Valladolid than Aranjuez. Ground-acquired remote sensing indices outperformed aerial assessments in correlation with grain yield. The best genotypes exhibited higher growth, better water status, and increased kernel weight per spike. The integration of remote sensing indices with laboratory-based traits proved effective in predicting grain yield, emphasizing the potential of this cmbined approach for characterizing crop performance. However, secondary traits showed low genetic correlation with grain yield and did not significantly improve broad-sense heritability.
