The impact of household income on waste minimization: a case study of Kuching city, Sarawak

A case study was carried out in the city of Kuching in order to find the contributing factors of waste separation of different income groups. The respondents were divided into four categories: low-income, lower middle-income, upper middle-income and higher-income group. The study shows that all the nine variables, education (X1), race (X2), laws for environment and waste (X3), pre-cycling attitude (X4), knowledge on source reduction (X5), knowledge on scavengers (X6), price of recyclable (X7), knowledge on traders (X8) and role of municipal authority (X9), are correlated with the dependent variable, i.e. waste separation, either for one group or the other. This paper focuses on the analysis of contributing factors of waste separation of householders of different income groups. Some policy implications are also suggested.
