P-UFO is a polyol that can be obtained from used frying oil (UFO). This useful finding helps in recycling the waste oil into valued oleochemical product. Currently, the UFO is used to produce animal feedstock or converted it into other oleochemical derivatives suchas methyl ester, emulsifiers and candles or regenerate it back into a food grade oil but the process is quite expensive. Recovered oil of good quality is also can be diverted for use as a fatty acid source or in the production of feed oil, paint, ink, biodiesel fuel through trans-esterification process as well as soap. To date, MPOB has successfully produced several types of palm-based polyols at pilot plant scale and now MPOB has successfully developed the technology that converted UFO into P-UFO, which has similar properties as a polyol produced from fresh (new) palm oil. This P-UFO is used to formulate flexible polyurethane (PU) foam by blending with suitable petrochemical-based polyol in certain weight ratios and in the presence of suitable isocyanate, additives and a blowing agent. Properties of flexible foams obtained were measured in terms of core density, tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength and compressive strength according to ASTMD3574.
