Observations on the skeleton of the Sumatran rhinoceros

Observations in the present paper is the result of a study on a Sumatran rhinoceros that died in captivity at Zoo Melaka. The skeleton of the Sumatran rhinoceros os briefly described and compared with the skeleton of the horse. The Sumatran rhinoceros has a higher number of thoracic vertebrae and a lower number of lumbar and sacral vertebrae. In addition, the length of the cervical is abolut three shorter than the thoracic vertebrae. This is an adaptation to counter the weight of large head.
