The current production of quality seeds and planting materials is insufficient in Malaysia. Unit Biji Benih dan Baka Ternakan (Planting Materials, Seeds and Livestock Breed Production Unit) was set up in MARDI, to ensure sufficient supply of planting materials of officially released or endorsed varieties by MARDI and Ministry of Agriculture. The unit also ensured the maintenance of quality and purity of these products. The identified commodities are padi, fruits, vegetables, field crop, herbs and new animal breeds. MARDI has been successfully awarded the ISO 9001 for the production of seeds of padi, papaya and grafted fruit seedlings. Apart from the mentioned functions, the unit also plan to set up a banana and orchid tissue culture laboratory. Discussion is on-going for possible joint projects with international seed companies.
