The first occurrence of Neogobius gymnotrachelus in the Slovak Danube
2001
Kautman, J. (Prirodovedne Muzeum, Bratislava (Slovak Republic). Zoologicke Oddelenie)
In the last few years some species of gobies of the genus Neogobius have begun to spread upstream in the middle and upper reaches of the river Danube. The first was N. kessleri, which is now common up to Vienna. Of the other species, the occurrence of N. fluviatilis and N. syrman was expected in the Slovak part of the Danube. However, a great surprise was the first record of N. gymnotrachelus in October 1999, in the left side arm of the Danube near Bratislava. The specimen was a male weighing 12.5 g. It is deposited in the ichthyological collection of the Slovak Museum of Natural History in Bratislava. Its morphometric measurements are described in the present article.
