This work gives a new opportunity of the selective determination of diacetyl and pentanedione by means of solid phase microextraction (SPME) followed by gas chromatography. The new SPME method is a suitable alternative to the conventional static headspace technique not only from the economic point of view but it also enables the determination of free vicinal diketones without the necessity of sample temperature treatment that can influence the conversion of precursors into vicinal diketones. This method is easy to do and quick with acquisition cost cheaper than that of the headspace dosing device. Thus, this method can be recommended for current control analyses.
