A new method enabling to determine nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH, benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, dibenzo(a,i)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)pyrene) and seven congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB, no. 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180) in vegetable matrixes (mainly barley and malt) within one extraction step has been developed. The process includes an extraction followed by a purification of the extract by means of a gel-permeation chromatography. The obtained extract is pure enough to determine both PAH and PCB. The final determination of PAH is carried out by HPLC and that of PCB by gas chromatography. All analytes can be set in microgram amounts with a relative deviation 25 %.
