Field experiments were established with the winter wheat variety Astella in order to investigate the effect of topdressing N on the yield and quality of the grains. N fertilizers were applied at the growth phase of the 6th leaf in three different solutions as follows: urea, ammonium nitrate with dolomite, DAM-390. The final concentration of inorganic N in the soil was 120-140 kg N/ha. Application of N fertilizers led to highly significant increase of grain yield ranging from +0.35 (DAM-390) to +0.82 t/ha (urea solution) as well as gluten and crude protein concentrations. The average control yield was 7.23 t/ha. When urea solution was applied, gluten and protein concentrations increased by 12.8 and 10.7%, respectively (140 kg N/ha), or by 8.8 and 9.7%, respectively (120 kg N/ha). In conclusion, the effect of N fertilizing on the grain yield and quality was positive, the best results were obtained with the use of urea solution. The effect depended on the final N concentration in the soil.
