A herpes-like virus designated koi herpesvirus (KHV) was first isolated in the USA in 1998 following outbreaks in koi and common carp in Israel and the USA. Since then, several cases have been confirmed all over the world. At present, this viral disease is considered to be one of the most risky factors affecting carp populations. The animals become disoriented and swim erratically with high breathing frequency, swollen gills and skin lesions. The isolated virus was cultured on koi fin cells. Electron microscopic examinations revealed morphological signs identical with viruses of the family Herpesviridae. Virion polypeptides and DNA are different from those of Herpesvirus cyprini and Channel catfish virus. The onset and severity of disease is influenced by water temperature. Fish seem most susceptible at 18-28 deg C, no morbidities occur at 13 deg C and 30 deg C. The diagnosis is mainly based on detection of viral DNA by the PCR method.
