The use of molecular markers for characterisation of spring barley for breeding to Fusarium head blight resistance

AFLP and SSR markers were used to describe the diversity of spring barley breeding lines with different levels of resistance against Fusarium head blight. Five expected resistance donors and three sensitive lines were tested in field and laboratory conditions. The occurrence of Fusarium in spikes was positively correlated with deoxynivalenol concentrations in seeds (r=0.92). Several DH lines have been selected from androgenetic barley progenies of the F1 hybrids between the susceptible line PI 383933 and resistant line PEC 210 or the susceptible line PI 383933 and resistant cultivar Chevron. These new lines were either resistant against the blight or showed only low level of infestation. A genetic relationship among parental genotypes and DH lines was demonstrated by cluster analyses based on 68 AFLP and 18 SSR markers. Significant differences in malt-extract values were observed in DH lines with or without the AFLP marker CAA/AGC 341bp.
