A prototype of laser profilometer has been constructed to measure the soil surface profile. The laser sensor measures distances to soil surface in 20 mm intervals determined by an optical sensor. The aim of our work was to verify some laser sensor properties such as linearity of measurement and sensitivity to surface colour. Laboratory experiments were carried out in order to scan a straight surface of three different colours (white, brown, grey) positioned at various angles. Two laser sensor window limits were calibrated using white colour surface and tested. The narrower window was more accurate. The differences in measurements between brown and white surfaces were much lower than those between these two colours and the grey surface. The output data of the laser sensor should be recalibrated into the unit length using calibration points located within the expected practical range of measurements (0.45-0.60 m) in order to increase the accuracy.
