Validation of potato simulation model

The aim of this study was to evaluate the simulation model SUBSTOR-Potato for potato growth and development in the Czech Republic. Two early potato cultivars, Rosara and Karin, were grown on experimental fields near Zabcice (South Moravia, 179 m a.s.l.) during the years 1994-2002. Tuber yields and cultivar were tested in the model. The real values of tuber yields were compared with those predicted by the model. The accuracy of the model was excellent when comparing yield values in the cv. Rosara (R2=0.97), but only from the years 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002. The result was much worse for the cv. Karin (R2=0.43). The model depended on the cultivar and tended to underestimate tuber yields in years with bad weather conditions (drought or high temperatures). In conclusion, the model SUBSTOR-Potato is suitable only in some cases as biased results may be expected for extreme weather data.
