Effects of Limonene Composition for Controlling of the Varroa destructor and Tropilaelaps clareae in Apis mellifera Hives

The ectoparasitic honey bee mite Varroa destructor was originally confined to the Eastern honey bee A. cerana. After a shift to the new host A. mellifera during the first half of the last century, the parasite dispersed world wide and is currently considered the major threat for apiculture. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of limonene composition on mites in honeybee colonies, A. mellifera L. with little brood in order to reduce mites population to tolerable levels. The results showed that, the reduction effects of V. deatructor and T. clareae in the treated colonies with fumigant and smoking pesticide materials limonene composition, respectively. The application of these strategies enables beekeepers to keep the V. destructor and T. clareae infestation below the damage threshold with reasonable additional labor and, at the same time, it assures high quality bee products.
