Around 70 percent of the population is engaged in agriculture in Cambodia, and the rice makes a significant contribution to food supply and to the Cambodian economy. Cambodia is within the Asian monsoon climate region and rice is grown during both the wet and dry seasons, with most of the arable land allocated to rice production. Approximately 24% of Cambodia is agricultural land, and the area of paddy rice cultivation is 3,007,545 ha (2012), which is 77% of the total arable land. Rice cultivation accounts for 94.6% of the total arable area around the Tonle Sap lake and Mekong rivers, and is predominantly lowland rice. Cambodian rice productivity has increased from 2.1 t/ha in 2001, to 3.2 t/ha in 2012. In future, the Cambodian rice industry will focus on the development of new rice varieties and advanced cultivation methods, especially post-harvest management of rice quality through new government policy initiatives. Increased effort and support in each of these key areas will help secure the future for the Cambodian rice industry.
