The Occurrence of Fire Blight Disease caused by Erwinia amylovora and its Official Management in Chungbuk Province in 2019

Fire blight disease caused by Erwinia amylovora occurs mainly in rose family plants, such as apples and pears. The pathogen causing fire blight disease has been registered as a prohibited quarantine pathogen in Korea, and this disease was first reported in pear orchard in Ansung, Gyeonggi-do, in 2015. However, there are no chemicals to control against fire blight disease, and the only way to control this disease is to dig and bury the host trees. Therefore, this study conducted an epidemiological investigation to block the pathway of disease occurrence by analyzing the cause of fire blight disease in Chungbuk province in 2019. The results of the study indicate the following: First, the disease occurred at 141ha of 221 farms in three cities including Chungju-si, from 2015 to 2019, and the detailed annual occurrence status was in 2015 (1ha for 2 farms), in 2018 (51.1ha for 74 farms), and in 2019 (88.9ha for 145 farms). Second, fire blight disease occurred mainly from May to August, especially in June (73.8%), followed by July (17.2%), May (7.6%), and August (1.4%). Third, the duration of confirmed burial after the suspected occurrence of fire blight disease was 11.9 days, and the period from occurrence to burial ranged from the shortest period of 5 days to the longest period of 19 days. In addition, the diffusion distance from the first place of pathogen was 21 km on average, and the farthest distance was 34 km to Bisan-myeon, Eumseong-gun.
