Current Research on Turfgrass Parasitic Nematodes in Korea: A review

Plant-parasitic nematodes are one of the major biological factors affecting the growth of turfgrass, in addition to other pathogens, pests, and diseases. Plant-parasitic nematodes cause severe damage to a variety of crops, including turfgrass. Nematodes impair normal root growth, resulting in growth inhibition, severe wilting, and eventual death. This review was conducted to investigate the status of research on turfgrass-related plant-parasitic nematodes in Korea and propose future research directions in this domain. In Korea, currently, only 17 research papers related to turfgrass-parasitic nematodes are available, with 12 focusing on taxonomy and 2 on control methods. A total of 47 species of turf-parasitic nematodes, belonging to 12 families, have been recorded in Korea. Since all previous papers have been published in English, and no Korean names are available for plant-parasitic nematodes found in turfgrass, new Korean names were assigned to 13 species of nematodes, including Filenchus cylindricus. In Korea, only two nematicides have been reported for controlling turfgrass parasitic nematodes. Therefore, registering control agents for economically damaging nematodes, such as root lesion and cyst nematodes is necessary. In addition, further study on the nemato dedensity response and tolerance levels of turfgrass against key damaging nematode species is urgently needed.
