In a 2-year experiment when 'Ganga 2' maize (Zea mays Linn.) was intercropped with 3 varieties, viz. 'Bragg', 'PK 308' and 'Shilajeet', of soybean (Glycine max (Linn.) Merr., the grain yield of the maize was not affected significantly, but of soybean decreased significantly. 'Shilajeet' showed the maximum reduction (60%), while, 'PK 308' minimum (56%) in the first year. However, 'Bragg' showed the maximum reduction (36%) and 'PK 308' the minimum (24%) in the second year when the maize was grown at 60 cm + 1 row of soybean. Paired-row system showed no specific yield advantage over the alternate-row system. The land-equivalent ratio, monetary advantage and net returns were the highest in paired rows of maize + 2 rows of 'PK 308' during the first year. The highest land-equivalent ratio, benefit-cost ratio, monetary advantage and net returns were found in maize at 60 cm + 1 row of 'Shilajeet' during the second year. Thus, 'Shilajeet' and 'PK 308' were found to be superior to 'Bragg' for intercropping with maize
