Seed pods were collected from five randomly taken trees of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. from 20 diverse sites (provenances) of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan during February-March 1990. Five months old seedlings of 100 progenies from 20 provenances were transplanted during August 1990 and observations were recorded in October 1992. Large variations were observed among provenances for total height, basal diameter, unforked height and straightness at the age of 26 months after transplanting. For the exploitation of total height and basal diameter, provenance selection was found more important, whereas for improvement of unforked height and straightness, both provenance and individual tree selection were equally important. Fatehabad, Muzzafarnagar, Kanpur, Allahabad and Haldwani provenances were found to have fast growing genetic material.
