Communication sources used by extension personnel and farmers

The study focusses on communication sources used by farmers and extension personnel to source information on cotton and wheat technologies in rural Haryana. The findings revealed that farmers used modes like: progressive farmers friends, neighbours, relatives and fellow farmers most frequently, whereas advisory letters, farmers tours, agricultural exhibitions and demonstrations were the least frequently used modes for acquisition of farm technology. Regarding use of sources, seed/fertilizer store, market and commercial agencies of insecticides/pesticides were mostly and frequently used. For extension personnel the important source of acquisition of farm technology was state department of agriculture and the important modes were staff meetings, trainings, leaflets/pamphlets, departmental circulars and subject matter specialists while the least used modes were scientists, agro-industry, telecast, journals, radio and personal correspondence with researchers. Farm and home visits, group meetings, trainings of farmers, demonstrations, crop competitions and field trips were most used methods by extension personnel for transfer of technologies. Whereas, television talks, radio talks, telephone calls, educational films, publications, advisory letters and exhibitions were the least used channels. Voluntary organisations, farmers' organisations and research stations were surprisingly also the least used sources.
