Livestock comprise an integral component of India’s rural economy and contribute to social and economic development in several ways. They provide nutrient-rich foods (milk, meat, and eggs), dung for domestic fuel and manure, and draught power for cropping activities and transportation. In addition, they make up an important source of wealth and act as a financial institution— a living bank with offspring as interest, and risk-mitigating mechanism during times of crisis.
