Pathogenic microflora associated with marine fishes of Satpati fishing centre in Maharashtra

Fifteen ma~ne fish samples were collected from Satpati fishing centre, marketand cooperative societies and also from Palghar market during April, 1995,for preliminary screening of microbes. Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta),clupeid (Thryssa sp.), Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus), and prawns (Penaeusindicus and P. malcolmsonii) are more prone to a variety of microbialcontaminations. Out of the total of 53 isolates from the samples, Escherichiacoli was :34%, followed by Salmonella typhosa 23%, Shigella sp. 15%, andKlebsiella Ilerogenes, 11 %. The association of these microbes with marinefishes is discussed.
