2022
Khan, M.A.
The problem of erosion presents a serious challenge to the existence of the poople in the areas around ravines. Land which is main supporter of life is being eaten year after year by ravines which are spreading their tentacles in the cultivation lands.Planning Commission has estimated the extent of ravines in Madhya Pradesh as 2.4 lakh hectare against the 3.13 to 3.17 million hectare of total ravines in India. In M. P. these ravines are mainly distributed in Gwalior, Bhind and Morena Districts. It has been estimated that these ravines are increasing at the rate of 809 hectare per year which comes to 2.5% per year.Chambal ravines are of varying depths, ranging from 1 to 60 mt. at places. Soil is deep sandy, deficient in organic matter and has a poor supply of nutrients. Rainfall in such areas is also erratic. Natural vegetation is poor and scrublike. These areas are badly affected by grazing.
