In Nlaharashtra State, the problem of soil erosion can be classified in three major groups depending on rainfall. (l) Coastal area of Konkan : The annual rainfall is above 100". (2) Scarcity tract of Decan : Here the annual rainfall is below 30" per year. (3) Area of adequate rainfall: Parts of Eastern Maharashtra where rainfall is between 40" to 50" per year. Thus, the State has to adopt various ways ad means to effectively conserve soil and moisture. In the heavy rainfall region main problem is skilful removal of -excessive run- -off at non-erosive velocity. While in scarcity tract the rainfall, which is low and erratic -zggravates the problem due to shallow soils ürein rate of run-off is more than infiltration. In such , areas the problem is to con- serve and utilize the moisture for benefit of thé vegetation.
