The Pokkali rice-prawn culture is the traditional farming system prevalent in the coastal belt of Central Kerala. The local Pokkali rice varieties and prawn infiltration are integral part of the traditional sustainable agri- aqua integration and it provides means of rural livelihood. The yield levels from traditional farming practices with local Pokkali variety of rice and prawn infiltration are very low which result in low profit. nbsp;New Pokkali rice variety (Vyttila- 6) has been developed while new prawn stocking have been identified. The traditional rice variety as well as prawn stocking were replaced by improved materials and their performance was evaluated for four years at Pokkali fields of Kumbalangi in Ernakulam district, Kerala. The yields of rice and prawn were recorded and BC ratios for rice and prawn integrated farming were worked out. The net return generated from this system was estimated as Rs. 0.47 lakhs, Rs. 2.20 lakhs, Rs. 1.43 lakhs and Rs. 1.68 lakhs per ha with the benefit cost ratio of 1.52, 3.02, 2.13 and 2.33 during 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively. Hence improved system of rice- prawn integration is economically viable and ecologically sustainable.
