Globally over 2 billion tonnes of grains, oilseeds, and pulses (hereinafter referred to as grains) are produced annually and stored at different points along the grain distribution chain between the producer and the consumer. The postharvest losses for grains range from <2% in properly designed and managed storage systems to 50% in poorly designed and managed storage systems. It is possible to reduce grain storage losses by enhancing the understanding of stored-grain ecosystems and developing and adopting loss detection and prevention technologies to increase availability of grains for human and animal consumption. Proper preservation of grain will also ensure supply of high quality raw material to the food industry where processed products are manufactured for human consumption. Researches done and being done at the University of Manitoba towards drying, handling, quality monitoring, and storing of grains are summarised.
