Cheema, A.A. | Awan, M.A. | Ali, Y. (Nuclear Inst. for Agriculture and Biology, Faisalabad (Pakistan))
Concerted breeding efforts on rice improvement at NIAB has resulted in the development of a salt tolerant, high yielding variety derived from IR-6 through irradiation. Preliminary evaluation for salt tolerance was done at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Three years multi-locational yield trials were conducted in saline soils. Based on higher yield potentials, fine grain and salt tolerance, the NIAB-6 was approved under the name 'Niab-Irri-9' in 1999 by the Punjab Seed Council for general cultivation in the province.
