Ten maize cultivars viz Sarhad White, Sarhad Yellow, Shaheen, PS-7930, Ehsan, Bahar, Azam, Faisal, Changez and Dehqan were screened for salt tolerance at early shoot growth (two weeks) under salt-stressed conditions of 0 and 10 dSm-1 NaCl levels. Plant salinity when compared with control. Shaheen, Bahar, Changez and Faisal were observed as salt tolerant while Sarhad white, Ehsan and Sarhad yellow as salt sensitive cultivars. Sodium concentration in the shoot increased manifold with salinity over control while K concentration in shoot was reduced significantly under salt stressed condition. Varietal behavior to Na+ and K+ uptake confirmed that the salt tolerant cultivars excluded Na+ and accumulated K+ as compared to salt sensitive cultivars. However, these findings need further investigation in the salt affected field.
