A 4 x 4 diallel cross experiment was conducted to estimate the effects of general and specific combining ability in cotton (G, hirsutum L.) The general combining effects were highly significant for number of bolls, boll weight and yield of seed cotton, but non- significant for height of main stem. Mean squares due to SCA effects were highly significant for all the characters except number of bolls which was only significant. The cultivar B-557 proved to be the best general combiner for yield of seed cotton and height of main stem. B.S-1 for No. of bolls and S-59-1 for boll weight. The cultivars B-557 and MNH-93 emerged as the best specific combiners. Hence, their exploitation is suggested in hybridization programmes for increased harvests of cotton.
