2001
Shameel, M. (Karachi Univ. (Pakistan). Dept. of Botany)
A new classification of algae based on five kingdoms of living organisms is presented up to the ordinal level, they are distributed it three kingdoms and include 19 phyla, 31 classes and 107 orders. The classification makes use of micromorphological, ultrastructural and phycochemical characteristics of algae. Typified names are preferred over descriptive names of various taxa. As a result of which three new phyla i.e. Volvocophyta, Vaucheriophyta and Porphyridiophyta, 10 new classes i.e. Chroocophyceae, Nostocophyceae, Volvocophyceae, Desmidiophyceae, Siphonocladophyceae, Vaucheriophyceae, Dictyophyceae, Porphyridiophyceae, Nemaliophyceae & Ceramiophyceae, and four new orders i.e. Glaucocystales, Pelagomonadales, Vischeriales and Vacuolariales have been created.
