Allelopathic potential of Eucalyptus microtheca F. Muell.

Allelopathic effect of Eucalyptus microtheca F. Muell. Was studied in laboratory experiments against the Pennisetum glaucum var. BARI-Hairy. In most of the treatments, statistically insignificant inhibitory effect of plant extracts was dominated which may be due to relatively low concentrations of the toxic chemicals. The significant toxic effects of exudates from fresh whole plant on radicle growth and stem on plumule growth were not found. Root exudates were found to be highly toxic to the radicle and plumule growth. The order of toxicity for both the radicle and plumule growth was different. Root exudates (100%) were highly toxic to the radicle growth followed by stem and leaves (67%) and the whole plant (44%) while the reverse of it was observed for the stimulatory effect i.e., the whole plant extracts (56%) were highly exhilarating to the radicle growth. For the growth of plumule, the order of toxicity was roots (78%), whole plant and leaves (67%) and stem (22%). While the reverse of it was observed for the stimulatory effect i.e., stem extracts enhanced the plumule growth more than the other plant parts. Seed germination was either slightly affected, remained unaffected or slightly stimulated. However, the rate of inhibition of seed germination was not more than 20%.
