A study was undertaken to determine the effects of planting dates, weed control treatments (Diruran MA-60 versus no weeding), and wheat varieties on weed density and wheat yield. The experiments were laid out in split plot design with 4 replications at Agricultural Research Institute (ARI), Tarnab during 1991-92 and 1992-93. Weed densities during both the years were similar for all planting dates. Similarly wheat varieties did not influence the weed densities during both the years. Chlorotoluron + MCPA had significant effects on weed densities during both the years. Mean weed density for Chlorotoluron + MCPA plot was 7 versus 45 for weedy control during 1991-92. In 1992-93, weed density for Chlorotoluron + MCPA plot it as 8 and for weedy control plot it was 50. Wheat yield in the early planting date for the year 1991-92 was significantly greater than for the mid and late planting. Wheat yields for October 15 planting were 2086 kg/ha followed by 1826 and 1506 kg/ha for November 15 and December 15 planting, respectively. Wheat plant height was significantly greater in the early planting than late planting. Spike numbers per unit area were greater in early planted than late planted wheat. Similarly Chlorotoluron + MCPA treated plot had greater number of spikes/m2 compared to weedy control plot. Almost similar trend in finding was recorded during 1992-93 for all the parameters studied.
