Combining ability estimates for yield and yield components inspring wheat

Combining ability estimates in a 5 x 5 diallel cross of springwheat varieties viz. Faisalabad 83, Faisalabad 85, Chakwal 86, Rawal87 and Rohtas 90 were determined for days to heading, days tomaturity, plant height, tillers per plant. spikelets per spike, grainsper spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield per plant. Theexperiment was conducted during 2000-01 at Barani AgriculturalResearch Station, Fateh Jang. The analysis of variance revealedhighly significant differences for all traits. SCA variance was higherthan the GCA variance for all the traits indicating non- additivegene action with the exception of days to heading, days to maturityand plant height, which showed additive gene action. Grains perspike showed both additive and non-additive gene action. Faisalabad83 and Chakwal 86 were good general combiners while Faisalabad 83x Chakwal 86 was the best specific combiners.
