Comparative study of anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract of Speratasarwari, a generalized carnivore, with Wallago attu, a piscivore scavengercarnivore, was undertaken. There are considered differences in theanatomy and morphology of the alimentary canals of these two catfishspecies that feed upon different prey items. Greater mouth gape, sharperand more pointed teeth, shorter and bifid gill rakers, Y-shaped stomachwith well developed gastric caecum and relatively shorter intestinallength in W. attu enabled it to attack on larger preys. Digestive systemsof these two catfishes are of the carnivore type, with characters of bothprimitive as well as advanced ones. The medium and wide, non-protractilemouth, cardifrom and villiform teeth, lack of gastric caecum and diffusedpancreas in S. sarwari are all primitive characters whereas stomach withwell developed gastric caecum and pancreas compactum in W. attu andgill rakers of the biserial dimorphic monacanth type are advancedcharacters.
