A cross was made between V-87094 (LU 26 X HD2179) and Inqilab-91 in 1994-95. The F1 was backcrossed with Inqilab-91. Subsequent generations were handled in a modified bulk method. A line V-00183 was selected and studied in a series of yield testing trials from 1999 to 2005 and in disease screening nurseries at various locations all over the Pakistan. Its yield ranged from 3856-5660 kg/ha in normal duration (mid Nov. planted) and 3089-3337 kg/ha in short duration (Dec. Planted) trials. It was also tested in sowing dates trials during 2003-04 & 2004-05 and its best yield was realized at 10 Nov. sowing i.e. 5660 and 5220 kg/ha, respectively. In disease screening nurseries its reaction was 10MRMS-20MRMS for yellow rust and 0-20MRMS for leaf rust under artificial inoculation. During the year 2005 which was an epidemic year of yellow rust this line showed two types of reaction i.e. 10MRMS/60MRMS in the screening nursery and the same type of variation was observed in the seed multiplication progeny blocks. The progenies with 10 MRMS YR reactions were selected and further multiplied. The line was approved for general cultivation in the Punjab and was named as Shafaq-06. The variety has short stature than Inqilab-91, hence is more lodging tolerant. The variety possesses good chapatti quality.
