Change of divisional nomenclature in the Shameelian classification of algae
2008
Shameel, M. (Karachi Univ. (Pakistan). Dept. of Botany)
In a recently proposed classification, algae were distributed in three kingdoms and nineteen phyla. As they are remarkably different from plants and have their own entity, it is suggested to use the ending-phycota for the name of a division (phylum) instead of the existing ending phyla. As a result of this, the new names of algal phyla, such as Cyanophycota, Prochlorophycota, Glaucophycota, Volvophycota, Euglenophycota, Dinophycota, Cryptophycota, Chrysophycota, Prymnesophycota, Bacillarophycota, Xanthophycota, Eustigmophycota, Raphidophycota, Porphyridophycota, Cholorophycota, Charophycota, Vaucherophycota, Phaeophycota and Rhodophycota have been characterized.
