Effect of different date male pollinizers on fruit characteristics and yield index of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) cultivars Zahidi and Dhakki

The effect of male pollinizers on fruit characteristics, viz., fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breadth, fruit pulp weight, seed weight and yield index of two date palm cultivars (Zahidi and Dhakki) was studied at Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. There was significant variation among the pollinizer for fruit weight, size, pulp seed weight, yield index viz., fruit set, fruit drop were also significantly effected by different male pollinizer while yield in kg per tree were non significant. The highest fruit weight and pulp weight (18.73 g and 17.73 g) was measured when Dhakki was pollinated with the male pollinizer M3. Maximum fruit was set when female variety Dhakki was pollinated with male M2. While minimum fruit was set when it was pollinated with pollen of M3. The largest fruit size was measured when Dhakki was pollinated with the male pollinizers M1. Dhakki produced maximum fruit weight and width when pollinated with M5. Pollens of M5 produced maximum pulp weight when used on Dhakki cultivar. Maximum fruit drop of 51.33% was noted when Dhakki was pollinated with-M5 while it was minimum (2.33%) when Zahidi was pollinated with M2. Dhakki produced maximum yield of 84.27 kg per tree as compared to 52.00 kg per tree produced by Zahidi. Male source M1 resulted in the highest yield of 79.67 kg per tree while minimum yield (55.00 kg per tree) was produced when pollens from M4 were used.
