Aromatic rices of Pakistan: A review

Aromatic rices constitute a special group of rice which is known as best quality rice world wide. Article reviews the efforts done to improve basmati rice on scientific basis by development of aromatic rice varieties. It also discussed constraints in developing high yielding basmati varieties such as limited genetic stock and poor combiners, Information about cultivation area of different cultivars such as Basmati-370, Basmati Pak (Kernal basmati), Basmati-198, Basmati-385, Super basmati, Basmati-2000, Shaheen basmati was also given. Problems related to Basmasti production include low yield potential, late maturity, insect pests, diseases and post harvest losses. Rice grain quality parameters such as milling recovery, grain size, appearance and shape, cooking and eating characteristics, amylose contents, gelatinization temperature, gel consistency, elongation ratio, water absorption, and volume expansion and nutritional quality were also discu ssed.
