Genetic evaluation of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) germplasm for yield and seedling vigor traits

A study was initiated to determine the potential of a collection of 100 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes for breeding improved varieties in terms of traits like number of spikes per plant, plant height, spike length, peduncle length, extrusion length, number of spikelets per spike, 1000-grain weight, grain yield per plant, coleoptile length, root length, shoot length and number of seminal roots. The correlation coefficient analysis was performed to determine the inter-relationship of different yield traits. Grain yield per plant had positive and highly significant association with number of spikes per plant, plant height, peduncle length, and extrusion length and 1000-grain weight. Principal component analysis was performed to assess genetic diversity. Out of eleven, four PCs were significant exhibiting more than one eigenvalues. The first four PCs had 58.06% variation. The PC1, PC2, PC3 and PC4 had 21.27, 15.99, 10.73 and 10.07% variability respectively, among the genotypes for the traits under study. The outcome of this research was the selection of diverse parents to plan the crosses with significant transgressive segregation for yield and seedling vigor.
