Suitability of some forage grasses as a component of mixtures for temporary grasslands

Tall oatgrass (Arrhenathreum elatius (L.) Beauv. ex J. et C. Presl) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) proved to the highly competitive in relation to other species, components of the mixtures. Prairie grass (Bromus catcharticus Vahl.) and meadow fescue (Testuca pratensis L.) were less competitive, while the lowest competition was noted in the case of timothy (Phleum oratense L.). Dry matter yields were determined most of all by the prairie grass and cockfoot, but prairie grass was characterized by the most satisfactory chemical composition
