Toponymic environment and legislative acts on application of geographical names

The aim of the work is to consider the relations between official and unofficial geographic names in Latvia as well as to review the development of legislation concerning the official adoption of geographic names. The development of the legal regulation of geographic names in Latvia since the proclamation of the Republic in 1918 is divided in to three periods: 1) 1918-1940; 2) 1940-1991; 3) 1991- up to the present time. The number of laws and rules regulating geographic names is shown in a table. The procedure of the official adoption of a geographic name at the present time is explained.
